The FINA World Championships are the World Championships for aquatic sports including diving, swimming, open water swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo. The Championships are conducted by FINA and the pool swimming events are contested in a 50 m, or "long course", pool. The FINA World Championship event was first held in 1973 and the event is now held every 2 years. From 1978 to 1998, the World Championships were held every four years, in the even years between the Summer Olympic years. Since 2001, the Championships have been held every two years, in the odd years. FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) or "Short Course Worlds" are held every two years in a 25 m swimming pool.
